Montalegre, which translates to “Happy Mountain”, is a refuge to the poor children and also single mothers of Recife, Brasil. Doris Gene Stewart, “Momma Doris”, was the founder and overseer of what started as an orphanage in 1976. She helped 777 children find homes across the world. Adoptions stopped after the government didn’t allow it any longer. It is a now a free daycare that helps 60 children ages 2-6 that come from impoverished homes in the area. Some families even live in mud houses on a landslide, so when it rains parts of their houses flood away and they need to find shelter elsewhere.
From 7-5 Monday-Friday, these children receive food, clothing, showers, schooling, hygiene necessities, social interactions, a place to nap, comfort, love, and a safety. There are currently 4 staff members, 3 teachers and a cook.
As of now this mission operation is funded through a group of people in Switzerland. This includes food, light, teacher wage, water, up-keep, and supplies.
The vision for this place is to educate by providing free English lessons and bible study lessons to share God’s love with the children.
The most important thing asked for is prayer. Lots and lots of prayer! We are also asking for people to share the vision with family and friends. After that, if you feel led to give, please do so. The current areas of need for funds are to support personnel with all the operations it takes to run this mission and new goals.
